Press release: Linxon wins extension order for urban mass rapid transit system for Kochi metro in India

August 10, 2020

Linxon has been awarded the complete power supply package including third rail for extension of existing Urban Mass Rapid Transit System in the city of Kochi by the Indian public company Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

Kochi Metro has been operational since June 2017 and phase 1 is one of the fastest completed metro project in India. The annual ridership of the metro is more than 1.6 million people. The extension from Petta – Thripunithura Corridor will be connecting Thripunithura, a prominent historical and residential region in the city of Kochi in Kerala, by the urban mass transit.

The Linxon turnkey scope involves design, engineering, project management, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of complete power supply scope for the extension of the existing Kochi Metro Urban Mass Transit System. The project consists of traction substations and auxiliary substations and a 750 V DC third rail system, basically a conductor rail providing electric traction power to railway trains and is placed outside of running rails.

“This project truly defines our vision of “from grid to vehicle” in the transportation segment. The power from the grid is fed through the traction substation via a third rail, to the vehicle. This solution is covered in one single package and it offers a unique proposition to rail infrastructure developers across the globe as it reduces the interfaces with various stakeholders”, said Frédéric Trefois, CEO of Linxon.

“The success to win this project is a great achievement from our team, as it helps us to strengthen our existing portfolio in the rail segment business in India at the right time. The rail business in India has a tremendous potential in the coming years and Linxon has been a pioneer in this segment”, says Dinesh Chadha, Hub Managing Director of APAC region for Linxon.
